Bio-technology if properly harnessed can prove to be of immense benefit to society, particularly in developing countries like Bangladesh. These benefits can be reaped in areas of agriculture, health, industry and energy. It is important to set priority areas of research keeping in view the crucial need of the country and to assess the need for investment on research in advanced genetic and molecular manipulation of plants, animals and microbes. Considering the importance of the establishment of a Bio-technology Institute the Science and Technology Division, Ministry of Education, Government of Bangladesh under a technical assistance program of the World Bank has taken the initiative to establish a Bio-technology Institute to harness the immense potentials of Bangladesh.
